Updates to the Michigan Abortion Laws

Michigan's Abortion Laws Have Changed: Here Is What You Need To Know

Recent changes in Michigan’s abortion laws have altered regulations surrounding abortion access. Understanding these new rules is crucial for making informed decisions about your healthcare.

Key Changes:

  • Elimination of Waiting Period and Mandatory Counseling: Previously, women had to wait 24 hours after an initial meeting before they could schedule an abortion procedure. This 24-hour waiting period following pre-abortion counseling has been removed.
  • Removal of Informed Consent Requirements: Healthcare providers are no longer legally obligated to inform patients about the potential benefits and complications associated with the abortion procedure. Previously, this requirement aimed to ensure women were aware of risks and side effects before deciding.
  • Expanded Pool of Abortion Providers: The requirement that only those with advanced medical training in abortions could perform the procedure has been eliminated. Now, a wider range of medical professionals, including nurses, can provide abortions. This change raises concerns about potential compromises in the quality of care and increased risk of complications, especially as abortion-related complications are already rising in Michigan.

What This Means for You

While the laws have changed, our core beliefs remain the same. We strongly encourage you to carefully consider all your options before making a pregnancy decision. Rushing into a decision is rarely advisable. We also believe in the importance of providing comprehensive and accurate information about potential complications – as with any given medical procedure, it’s important to understand what you can expect before you proceed with an abortion.

If you are considering abortion, we continue to recommend speaking with someone to review all your options  and support you in making an informed choice.
